Omron Scientific Technologies has introduced the G9SX-SM Standstill Safety Monitoring Unit.

The G9SX-SM monitors standstill status for machines with varied hazardous part stop times, with no sensors required.

The system can operate out of the box without any need for sensitivity adjustments, or users can manually adjust system sensitivity to the specific needs of each machine.

It can be used with inverter-controlled systems without any threat of malfunction, due to the inverter’s dynamic brake or auto-tuning functions.

When a hazard does not stop immediately it is necessary to prevent access to the hazardous area until the motion has stopped.

The G9SX-SM minimises the delay time caused by such hazards by sensing the stop motion instead of waiting for a countdown timer to expire.

It detects back electromagnetic force (BEMF) that is generated when the motor rotates, to determine whether the motor is rotating or in standstill condition.

It determines that the motor has stopped when it detects that the BEMF falls below a set criterion.

The system operates on 24V DC, but can monitor motors up to 480V AC.

It provides three safety standstill detection outputs and two auxiliary outputs, and is available with spring-cage or screw terminal blocks.

Detailed LED indicators enable easy fault diagnosis.

Standstill and low-speed monitoring is required by international standards for machine tools, printing presses and other applications.

The G9SX-SM is certified to all relevant North American and International safety standards, meets Safety Category 4 (EN954-1) requirements and is engineered to deliver reliable standstill operation in these applications.

The latest version of CX-Supervisor from Omron incorporates a new data log viewer, one-click simulation facilities, full support for remote maintenance and an extended graphics library.

Like its predecessors, CX-Supervisor V3 is a machine visualisation package that can be used for monitoring and logging the performance of small- to medium-sized production lines as well as individual machines.

The data log viewing facilities in this latest version allow users to fine tune the operation of plant and machines.

Performance data for different operating periods can be readily overlaid, allowing anomalies and adverse trends to be identified at a glance.

Vertical and horizontal cursors, together with a new data table are further aids to performance analysis.

Flexible reporting facilities are also provided - data can be sent directly to a printer or exported in the form of an image or an industry-standard CSV file.

With the integrated simulation feature provided by CX-Supervisor V3, users can simulate the operation of HMI and PLC applications on a single screen, without need for the HMI or PLC hardware.

This speeds and simplifies program debugging, thereby reducing the time needed for fault finding and commissioning.

With the constant pressure to reduce costs resulting in minimal on-site maintenance cover for many plants, the demand for remote maintenance facilities is growing rapidly.

To address this demand, CX-Supervisor V3 features an integrated web server that allows users to access and set actual values of variables, alarm data, error logs and other key information from any location where an internet connection is available.

To help maximise the visual appeal of CX-Supervisor V3 applications, the new graphics library supports smart graphics with embedded animations.

Provision is also made for users to create their own graphics objects, so that their virtual machine can be made to closely resemble the real thing.

CX-Supervisor V3 incorporates other improvements including support for JPEG and GIF images, a display palette of 16 million colours and, for advanced users, a .Net web interface that allows the integration of external applications with data from CX-Supervisor.

Schneider Electric has introduced the Powerview power and energy monitoring software solution, which is suitable for small system applications to help businesses save money and energy.The Powerview software works with the company’s Powerlogic EGX100 integrated gateway and range of meters.

It allows users to track real-time power conditions and remotely monitor electrical equipment and installations across an entire electrical network.

Through the system, users can measure the energy consumption of specific applications or circuits by day and hour, analyse and compare total harmonic distortion, produce reports and plot trends.

The software is capable of reading up to 32 meters, transferring data from RS485 on which the metering devices run to the Ethernet port on which the Powerlogic gateway operates, allowing data to be viewed on the user’s computer.

The Powerview software is compatible with a choice of Schneider’s metering devices, including the Compact NSX moulded case circuit breaker, which also monitors energy and power, and the entire Powerlogic range.

The system allows organisations to achieve transparent energy management and, by having an integrated gateway, software and metering function, helps businesses qualify for an enhanced capital allowance on automatic monitoring and targeting equipment, according to the company.

Zina Shair, marketing engineer at Schneider, said: ‘By tracking real-time power conditions, analysing power quality and reliability and studying historical trends, businesses can pinpoint energy waste or unused capacity, as well as verify efficiency improvements and allocate energy usage to buildings, departments or processes.

‘This will then help to cut energy-related costs, avoid downtime and optimise equipment utilisation,’ added Shair.

Maintenance costs at STW cuts by ABB

Severn Trent Water (STW) is achieving savings of up to GBP2,400 a week on pump maintenance after upgrading its pump control software, which was supplied by ABB.

STW had installed four submersible foul pumps at its sewage treatment works in Worcester, pumping raw sewage from a new foul well.

The pumps are driven by four 132kW ABB industrial drives, supplied complete with filters to reduce harmonics caused by the drives.

Following commissioning of the variable speed drives (VSDs), STW experienced a number of blockages in the foul pumps, caused largely by rags sticking to the impeller.

As well as downtime, clogging can lead to sewage pollution.

A total system failure can lead to effluent leakage, with implications for the environment and health and safety, as well incurring clean-up costs and resulting in possible breaches of legislation.

Clearing these blockages was a time-consuming process.

Every time a pump became blocked, it had to be removed from the well, split open and cleaned out, which is an expensive job because a crane has to be hired each time to clean the pump.

To cure this problem, ABB suggested installation of its Anti-Jam software, a module of its Intelligent Pump Control software.

The Anti-Jam software performs a number of cleaning cycles every time the pump starts; each cycle consist of a series of rapid ramp ups in both forward and reverse directions.

Taking one to two minutes to complete, the cleaning cycle removes the debris from around the pump volute, preventing it from entering the pump and blocking it when the pump ramps up from zero to its normal operating speed.

The cleaning cycle is also started when the VSD detects a drop in pump efficiency.

Following installation of the software in February, STW has not experienced a single blockage of the foul pumps.

ABB supplied its module completely free of charge to STW.

Siemens PLM Software enables vehicle development

Siemens PLM Software claims that its technology enabled the development of more than 90 per cent of the vehicles that automakers are exhibiting at the North American International Auto Show.

The software was used to plan, evaluate and coordinate the development and manufacturing engineering of these vehicles.

Siemens PLM Software provides OEMs with managed collaboration across complex engineering functions and throughout the extended supply chain.

In 2008, there were 68 million cars produced globally by the top 50 Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers and of those vehicles, Siemens PLM Software’s technology was used in 64 million, the company said.
