Yesterday, Siemens and its employees embark on a new relief action on the occasion of the one year anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake.
Siemens signed a donation agreement today with the Sichuan Red Cross to help reconstruct the Gongyi Public Clinic in Chongzhou City of Sichuan Province in order to improve the disaster-hit healthcare services in the town. The over RMB 3.3 million Siemens contribution, which comprises of donation from its employees nationwide and a batch of medical equipments and services, will be used to renovate the local clinic’s devastated buildings and build a new inpatient building as well as to equip the clinic.
Up to date the donation has brought the total relief amount of Siemens and its employees to over RMB 17 million since the earthquake. Mr. Dai Xiaoyan, Vice Chairman of Chengdu Political Consultative Conference, Ms. Zhang Bo, Vice Chairman of Sichuan Red Cross, Mr. Nong Keqiang, Senior Vice-President Siemens Ltd., China and General Manager Region South and Dr. Cao Yongsheng, Vice-President of Sector Healthcare, Siemens Ltd. China attended the signing ceremony.
The unprecedented earthquake last year brought the healthcare facilities in Chongzhou almost into debris. In Gongyi Public Clinic alone, the earthquake damaged many parts of the clinic and the rooms and facilities which became unsafe after the earthquake have seriously affected the clinic’s normal operation and capacity.
As per the donation agreement, the donation will be deployed to build a new inpatient building and renovate other buildings in the clinic. The medical equipments and services contributed by the company this time includes brand new “Iconos R100″ X-ray Fluoroscopy, “Multimobile” mobile X-ray and “Premier” Color Ultrasound equipment of the so called SMART product line of Siemens Healthcare which are specifically designed in the Siemens R&D centers in China to deliver easily accessible, affordable and high quality medical imaging services to satisfy the healthcare needs of the local people in rural areas of China. According to the plan the reconstructed clinic will take up an area of 2,500 square meters and upon completion later this year the clinic will be able to provide professional healthcare services to over 15,000 people living in Gongyi Town with a capacity of 40 beds and 100 patients per day.
“We very much appreciate what Siemens has done for Sichuan people over the past year as a responsible corporate citizen. I believe the rebuilt clinic will contribute a lot to the recovery and improvement of the medical system here and help local people enjoy a better life with the upgraded healthcare services” said Ms. Zhang.
“Siemens and its employees are side by side with the people in the earthquake areas. Over the past year we’ve been engaged in all kinds of relief actions to help the people get through the darkest moments” said Dr. Bernd Ohnesorge, Executive Vice-President Siemens Ltd., China and President of Sector Healthcare, commenting on the long-term relief endeavors of Siemens. “Today we’re very glad that at the 1 year anniversary of the earthquake we further make a meaningful step to help rebuild the clinic. The clinic will always stand as a statue of our hope and carry our wishes and good will to the local people. With the brand-new clinic we sincerely hope that the people will enjoy proper and high-quality healthcare services here”.
In May 2008, starting from the second day of the outbreak of the earthquake in Sichuan province, Siemens and its staff have made all-out disaster relief efforts. By May 2009, Siemens has donated a total of more than RMB 17 million of cash, medical equipment and services, water filters and also education fund to help the local people combat the disaster.
